Diets Explained
GI - How it works- The Glycaemic Index is a system of ranking food according to the speed at which your body digests it and converts it into glucose. You're asked to eat low GI foods that release energy slowly and keep blood sugar levels steady - so that you'll feel fuller for longer and less tempted to snack! THE DRAWBACKS - Some foods have surprising GI ratings - ice cream has a low GI because of its high fat content-but if you eat a lot of that, you won't lose weight. To help you get it right, a list of GI food rankings is available at Healthpoint Chemist.
LOW-FAT How it works- Cutting back on fats is a tried and tested way to trim your waistline. THE DRAWBACKS - While most of us have a hang-up about the word fat, not all fats are bad. Good fats-found in oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds and vegetable oils- are essential for maintaining good health and an effecient metabolism. |

LOW-CAL How it works - The principle here is as simple as "eat less-lose weight". The average woman's recommended daily calorie intake is 1,940 calories or 7760 kilojoules. But a low-cal diet could easily cut this down by 500 calories a day. THE DRAWBACKS - You shouldn't focus on just the calories and forget to ensure that what you eat is fillling and nutritious. You can also fall into the trap of yo-yo dieting. Drastically cutting calories isn't realistic long term. It will send your body in to starvation mode: your metabolism may slow down and when you do start eating more the weight could pile back on!
ATKINS - How it works- On this plan, devised by Dr Robert Atkins, you swap carbs for a high-fat, high-protein diet. In the first phase of the plan, all fruit and many vegetables are banned. All this means your body switches to using its fat stores to provide it with energy, helping you to shift kilos in super quick time. THE DRAWBACKS- some dieters take it as a licence to eat foods high in unhealthy fats and cut out all carbs, including healthy ones - something that has raised health concerns among nutritionists over possible side effects.
ZONE How it works- Based on the findings of Dr Barry Sears, a US Biochemist, this diet claims to provice the ideal balance of carbohydrate & protein to keep insulin production to a minimum, leading to weight loss. Meals must contain 40% carbohydrates (including fruit & vegies) 30% protein and 30% fat. THE DRAWBACKS- It's a bit of a complicated, high tech plan that means sticking to a strict carbohydrate, protein and fat ratio. Weight loss is essentially due to colorie restriction
