Hay fever tends to run in the family
Allergic Rhinitis/Hayfever
Over-the-counter oral antihistamine can be very effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, especially since new drugs are now available with minimal sedating (drowsiness) effects.
Hayfever is an allergic reaction causing inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose when nasal passages are exposed to an allergy- causing substances (allergen).
Hay fever tends to run in the family. It is not contagious, but may occur more often in patients with asthma, eczema, sinusitis and nasal polyps. Hayfever is further classified to seasonal or perennial. Seasonal hay fever is usually caused by outdoor allergens and symptoms develop very quickly after exposure. These may come from trees, plants, flowers, grasses, mould or weeds. However, perennial allergic rhinitis occurs all year round. It results from exposure to an allergen encountered every day, such as house dust, dust mites, cosmetic spray, household cleaners, animal hair and industrial fumes.

Sore Throat
A sore throat is a raw, painful feeling in the throat aggravated by swelling! It is one of the most common complaints for which people see a doctor. There are four different areas of the throat that may become sore.....
1. Pharyngitis - The pharynx is the area behind the mouth and soft palate at the back of the throat.
2. Tonsillitis - the tonsils are located at the sides of the throat and will appear red and swollen.
3. Laryngitis - The Larynx is at the top of the airway. When infected, patients suffer hoarseness or loss of voice.
4. Epiglottitis - is a flap that closes over the airway during swallowing. The patient will have difficulty breathing!
HEALTH MANAGEMENT-
Most sore throats clear up within 7-10 days. If symptoms persist, see your doctor
Antibiotics may be prescribed for a bacterial sore throat, but will not be effective against viruses.
An antiseptic spray or gargle such as Difflam C or Betadine helps ease the symptoms of a sore throat.
Medicated lozenges such as Difflam and Cepacol are convenient to suck on to relieve pain and inflammation of the throat.
For any advice on symptoms your may develope over Winter, please come and see us at Red Apple Chemist.
Should you have a flu shot?
The Flu, also known as influenza, is a common & highly contagious disease that affects millions of Australians each year. A typical case of flu may cause some people to feel unwell and miss days of work. However, in the elderly and people with existing health problems, it can lead to hospitalisation or even be life threatening. The Flu vaccine is now available at Healthpoint Chemist. The fluvax is recommended for everyone aged 65 years and over, children and adults with a chronic medical condition. Anyone whose immune system is not fully functioning should also consider a flu injection. Please see your doctor today to obtain a prescription.
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
High blood pressure is generally considered to be a systolic pressure of above 140 and a diastolic pressure of 90 or above. A high blood pressure may lead to cardiovascular disease if it is constantly elevated, and life expectancy may be reduced.
Excitement, nervous tension and shock can all elevate blood pressure, and an increase in weight and low activity levels can contribute to an increase in blood pressure.
Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis occurs when small sacs located in the large intestine become inflamed. Diverticulitis are small pockets of bowel projecting through the outer muscle layer of the large intestine. These small sacs are forced out by increased pressure within the bowel. A low fibre diet causes increased force of contraction raising pressure inside the bowel and contributing to the formation of diverticula. Constipation, decreased physical activity and ageing are also associated with the formation of diverticula.
HEALTH MANAGEMENT:
- Always consult your doctor for diagnosis and advice
- Increasing dietary fibre, improving bowel habits and increasing physical activity are all important for treating and preventing Diverticulitis
- In mild cases - Start with a liquid diet, then later a soft, low fibre diet and a psyllium seed preparation. A high fibre diet is recommended after one month
- In severe cases - Generally, people with severe symptoms will be hospitalised and given intravenous fluids.
